Boiler Decentralisation, Palace Green & Bailey, Durham

Durham University

Client – Durham University

Architect – Howarth Litchfield Partnership

Completion – October 2011

Value - £700,000

We were employed to carry out the builders work in connection with the decommissioning of existing district heating system and installation of new localised boilers.

The works comprised of works to 15 boiler rooms and 18 satellite rooms in 33 locations throughout the site. The work was carried out in three main phases approximately 14 weeks each phase.

The works comprise the decommissioning of the existing boilers, plant etc. in the main boiler house and the installation of new localised boilers in or adjacent to the various buildings, and associated builder’s work including removal of redundant services and provision of gas main to serve new boilers.

The existing heating mains in and around Palace Green (World Heritage Site) had to be excavated up and new service ducts formed within the ground to install new gas mains and services between the various locations. Several boiler rooms had to be built or extended to accommodate the new boiler plant, in and around the numerous listed buildings.

The works went extremely well and completed to the satisfaction of all parties involved. The infrastructure scheme was highly commended at the RICS Renaissance Awards 2012.
